When a piece of art is recognized by someone the piece is considered representational. An example of representational art is by Leonardo da Vinci “The Mona Lisa”. The piece was used to capture key aspect such as the eyes, nose and outlines. Statues or sculptures are also examples of representational works.
Abstract art veers away from reality when it comes to displaying an image. Unrecognizable can be used to describe abstract art. Abnormal shapes, colors and forms are used in abstract art. Abstract art can vary on its severity. Slight change in a piece of art that is used to describe something can be defined abstract due to the fact it does not accurately portray what is being shown. The piece I chose to describe was American Gothic by Grant Wood. The piece is considered a representational piece. The artist painted this piece while his dentist and his sister posed for him. The extreme details of the figures in the painting are key examples of what makes this piece representational. The colors of the eyes, shapes of the faces, lines on the gentlemen’s face are very detailed and specific.

In my opinion the style of American Gothic is realism. Since the painting was of actual people who stood in front of Grant Wood while he painted, I would say it’s safe to say the piece was meant to illustrate detailed and key parts of the figures in the painting. The representation of the physical aspects of the models that posed for Grant Wood in this painting are expressed in great detail. From the color of the eyes and outfits to the lines on the man’s face, the details are very specific and clear. The two models in the painting are portraying a farmer and his unmarried daughter, which explains the iconography of the painting. The models used were his dentist and his sister, who helped him portray the farmer and his unmarried daughter. For me I see the father as a protective stern individual. The face portrayed is very blank, a stern look in the man’s eyes while holding the pitch fork shows protectiveness. Also hints at the environment as being a farmer. The daughter
