Tiffany Foster Professor Dunn Comp 101 10 December 2014 Stand Up Although hurtful and demeaning, prejudiced slurs of all varieties have always transpired throughout society. Everyone has been offended by a bigoted remark at some point in time, but few people truly know how to respond to those insults in an effective manner. In the essay, “Don’t Just Stand There,” Diane Cole relates discriminatory offenses to her real-life experience as she tells a story of when a co-worker told her a joke with a very offensive punch line.
The way in which Australian comedy is regarded, understood, or interpreted can dramatically affect the overall consensus of what it may imply. Australian comedy walks the line of this, you either love it, or you hate it. This is evident in the public’s overall positive responses to Chris Lilley’s mini mockumentary series, “Summer Heights High” & “Jonah from Tonga” which portrays Australian comedy as to have the ability to find humour in each other’s flaws, often more shocking and confronting than initially expected. Resulting in a fan base that can relate themselves to characters such as “Jonah Takaluwa” and possibly find comfort and closure, Chris Lilly stated in an interview with The Daily Telegraph “I’ve never had any negative feedback”,” I have all the time come up and claim that they’re Jonah”, “It’s all in context and it’s designed to be shocking and confronting/”
As a provocative and anti-politically correct television series, South Park offers its viewers an alternative space to critically think about and discuss contemporary issues. Contrary to its reputation for potty-mouth humor, South Park often has insightful perspectives on complicated topics in present-day culture. The writers of South Park are acutely aware of the racism and racial prejudices in contemporary society. This is demonstrated through their satirical representations of non-white groups as well as through jokes directed at racial prejudice itself.
The Blacklist The Blacklist, directed by Jon Bokencamp, is one of the best crime drama television shows that has ever existed. The series begins with a former U.S. Navy officer, Raymond “Red” Reddington, turning himself in to the FBI after eluding capture for decades. In the years prior, Reddington had disappeared from the Navy, turned into a high-profile criminal, and became number one on the FBI’s most wanted list. After turning himself in, he claims to have developed a list of the world’s most elusive and dangerous criminals that he will exchange for immunity under one circumstance: he only wants to speak with FBI agent Elizabeth Keen. Keen, fresh out of the FBI training academy, has just started her first day on the job as an FBI profiler and has no idea who Raymond Reddington is or what he wants from her.
He returns to his office absolutely livid and tries to quit on the first day. His boss however, gets parks to talk about his experiences and convinces him to do work exposing the injustice of this racism. One day when Parks is eating in the cafeteria in the traditionally white section, an old black man comes up to Parks and asks him why he is causing trouble for all the black folks. Parks responds by asking the old man why he continues to eat in the back. The old man basically says he eats in the back because it is tradition and that Parks should do the same.
Some topics joked about include AIDS, rape, death, teen pregnancy, school shootings, domestic violence, murder, abortion, etc. For example, in Season 9 Episode 15, Peter has to pretend to be a teenager again. When he decides he wants to make the popular kids pay for the way they treated him, he is seen cocking a large gun before trying to call it off when he hears gunshots and screaming over the phone (Danielle 6). “The Office” makes jokes about controversial topics that cause backlash from producers. Jokes are made about slavery, people with disabilities, systemic racism, the LGBTQ+ community, perverted father-daughter relationships, murder, catfishing, etc.
In order to improve viewership and creativity within the hit television show, Saturday Night Live, the producers must enforce a plan to diversify the cast members by placing quotas on the Human Resources department to ensure all are represented properly, recruiting from more standup comedian centers rather than typical non-diverse comedy
Diversity Event on Privilege This diversity week I attended a seminar about acceptance and privilege, which was run by the members of the student senate. The meeting was interesting because it was run by my peers, and they incorporated many different cool aspects into their presentation. They opened the meeting up by us playing an ice breaker called Entourage where we all walked around playing rock, paper, scissor shoot while we walked around getting to know each other.
How could diversity in the United States potentially lead to collapse? There are many elements that contribute to collapse. Whether it’s on a larger scale, like a country, or on a smaller scale, like a family. There is an infinite amount. But the most important one, is diversity.

In the past 80 years, diversity has become increasingly accepted by individuals and the media. While there is still work to be done, I have observed a sharp contrast between the present and early 1900’s. I am privy to this contrast through my work in the kitchen at a senior living community. The kitchen staff itself is composed of people from all socioeconomic statuses and ethnic origins, making it a perfect example of diversity. The not so perfect truth is that many of the residents of this facility resent those of other races.
On The Office the minority group definitely outweighs the dominant, but one character named Dwight shows a great example of how someone who is in a dominant group may act. Much of his power comes from him being White, how much land he has, and how well he does in the workplace. He uses this to discriminate against the minority groups. Infact, in one episode, he specifically picks up illegal immigrants, has them do his work for him, and tells them that he will pay them at the end of the day.
Within the next 50 years the human population will continue to grow around 50 percent with an estimated 394 million people by 2050. Retirement will affect millions of people dramatically and the number of disabilities cases will rise. In fact the more education people have to more job seekers will look for suitable employment (Toossi, 2002).Education will be the key to successful employment. In today’s world you are finds more career working adults going back to school to advance their education for better jobs. In addition women are working more than men I believe by 2040 women will be working in more men driven careers.
I attended the Diversity Workshop on Wednesday, January 17, 2018, at 11:30 am – 1:00 pm, with Tabatha L Jones Jolivet, Ph.D., titled “Reclaiming My Time: Leveraging Scared Agency and Spiritual Wealth in the Face of Imposter Syndrome and Stereotype Threat”. I thought this was an inspiring diversity workshop. My reaction to it was, “okay, I feel like I now have a few more tools in my belt to help me grow my skills in diversity.” Dr. Jolivet was very knowledgeable in her field of higher education. My favorite part was when she, owned her background and opened with that spiritual song.
Have you ever wanted to be one hundred percent content with your life and the way you are living? In American Beauty, the 1999 comedic-drama, Kevin Spacey plays Lester Burnham, a husband and father who is fed up with his boring, day to day life, and quits his job deciding to recreate himself as a pot-smoking, free-spirited man with no worries or obligations. Through the use of satire of the American middle-class, the movie portrays personal satisfaction; social romance, materialism, self-liberation, and redemption. The main argument presented is that success is found when one secures the things that make them happy whether it be materialistic or idealistic. This movie is a phenomenal example of one persons’ idea of a successful American versus another idea.
