The importance of seeing yourself represented in movies, shows, or even books is important. For the longest time throughout the media, the same type of main character was always displayed. Just now, in the past decade we began seeing and began normalizing main characters of different backgrounds, sexualities, and ethnicities. Diversity matters because an accurate depiction of society has an impact on both the over and under-represented groups in society, diversity in popular films and television programs is important. In contrast, a false, frequently hostile portrayal is destructive to both entire communities and specific individuals. Growing up in a small conservative town, there was no diversity in the school system, police department, educational system, or the political scene. I never questioned why there were no people of color or different types of people. When I went to college, I was hit with a cultural shock. Seeing so many different types of people from different ethnicities, religions, and backgrounds was something that I had never been exposed to until now. After getting exposed to so many different types of humans, I began to realize that when growing up some of these people that I became friends with had no one that looked like them growing up. This is a problem that I quickly came to realize and notice. It's not until the most recent decades that representation of all people has begun to flourish in the music industry, in Hollywood, and all other forms of media. The film Captain Marvel was a powerful film for all women and little girls. They were allowed to see a powerful female superhero. Women have been an integral part of the film and television industry since its inception, but it has been only in recent years that the importance of women leads in movies and shows has been recognized. Women leads have become increasingly important in both film and television for several reasons. Diversity and representation are brought to the big screen by women leads. Women were frequently cast in supporting roles since male actors and directors dominated Hollywood for a long period. In addition to being unfair, this lack of representation limited the ability to tell stories and reinforced negative stereotypes. Yet now that there are more female leads in films and television series, we are beginning to see a more diverse and inclusive representation of women in media. Young girls and women are given valuable role models by women leaders. Women of all ages can be greatly inspired and empowered by strong, competent women on TV. It encourages women to achieve their dreams, no matter how big or small, and aids in dispelling gender stereotypes. Women's self-esteem and sense of self-worth can be greatly impacted when they see themselves accurately and positively portrayed on
