I grew up in sunny California, within bustling cities, warm weather, and a fast-paced lifestyle. It was all I knew until the big move to Virginia. Once I reach the new town I was going to call home, I experience a drastic change in lifestyle and culture. The two areas couldn't be any different. They had a diverse mix of people, a distinctive blend of cultures, and a unique lifestyle. While some changes were welcomed, others were difficult to accept. My reality appears to be changing quickly, and with each new change I discover, I am reminded of the home I left behind. Eventually with time, I grew to accept the city around me and learn to appreciate and embrace my new home.
California is known for its diversity, but the city I grew up in was mostly dominated by Asians and Hispanics, with Whites and African Americans being the minority. This level of cultural homogeneity was something in which I had grown accustomed to. However, with the move to Virginia, I was exposed to a diverse racial landscape, which has allowed me to connect with several people who share my cultural background. This is demonstrated through its festivals and celebrations, local cuisine, language, fashion trends, music, and the overall vibe and atmosphere of the city. Growing up in a Californian city where two races predominated made it challenging to feel a sense of belonging and familiarity. It wasn't until after the move to Virginia, that I started exploring the city's culture and began to feel like I had found a meaningful place. I gained a deeper appreciation for the diversity and richness of the city's culture, and I began to feel like I was a part of it.
