Divorce in Israel Is Discriminatory Against Women
Divorce is an emotional and painful decision for any couple to make, in Israel that decision can be made even more painful as the husband can legally stop the wife from obtaining one. For a Jewish couple to obtain a divorce, the husband must issue the wife a writ of divorce, called a Get and the wife must accept it. The laws in Israel were created from the Torah (the law on which Judaism was founded) and have been in place for thousands of years. Many women find the laws discriminatory and unfair.
Jewish Law looks highly upon marriage, it looks unkindly on any abuse of the marriage law by either partner. The literal interpretation of the law states clearly that only a man may initiate divorce proceedings, but due to different interpretations of the religious laws, a wife may begin the process by convening the court. Marriage is a sacred commitment between a man and a woman and a divorce is considered a solution of last resort.
