In Do androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Phillip K. Dick situates humans and androids in a post-apocalyptic world where it is difficult to distinguish the two. True humanity is the only thing that separates humans from androids and animals. The ability to care and to empathize with animals that are real or fake is proof of being a human being. Humans are also believed to have a unique connection to empathy and the religion Mercerism. In the novel, empathy is seen as a title given to humans as powers making them superior to androids. With the help of Mercerism, a religion that fuses with empathy, society can be controlled and ruled. Within mercerism, as a religion and empathy, it brings order to society. Although John kills an animal that is suppose to be cared for which involves killing and damaging the image of empathy. John and Pris see a spider across the stage case and in symbol wide the spider symbolize life, where there is none, much more when most of the little animals vanished from the world due to world war terminus. This war lead to the destruction of cities, and radiation-laden dust in the wind. The spider brings the glimpse of hope that allows humans to think that it isn't all destroyed. Animals are needed to be taken cared for by humans in order for their species to survive. Even when a human couldn't afford a real one you, they had an option of getting an electric animal seem presentable towards their neighbors. But Irmgard feels that the spider would function with four legs so Pris takes the spider into the kitchen and begins to cut up the legs with a small pair of scissors (194).
