The novel, Ghost Boys, teaches the reader about the importance of empathy and how powerful it can be. The reader has the opportunity to witness how empathy turned Jerome and Sarah together and changed everything for the better. During the book, Jerome and Sarah developed a relationship that resulted in a positive outcome of evolution. As Jerome became more comfortable with Sarah, he began to share his story with Sarah. Then as Sarah began to expose herself to the truth about the fact her dad did purposely shoot Jerome, she was experiencing grief and sympathy towards him which later caused her to have the main priority to spread awareness and do anything she could to help him. She was able to accept this through the empathy developed from the relationship between her and Jerome. If Sarah never felt any emotion towards Jerome, she would have lacked that quality of inspiration and perseverance. She would continue to be stubborn and deny everything that was going on all around her. If they both never felt empathy for each other, Jerome would have left in an instant and wouldn’t have looked back. He would never speak to her or have anything to do with her. He would stay an angry ghost boy, unsure what to do. Sarah would have never cared to hear his perspective, and never would have had the passion to create a website and spread Jerome’s story. If she never felt anything towards Jerome, she would have never had the motivation that drove her to success. “Maybe you shouldn’t Sarah, maybe you should listen to your parents. Crazy, part of me doesn’t want to see Sarah hurt” This is the early stages of how empathy causes Jerome to care for Sarah. He watches his words “Sorry If I’m being mean” Pg. 110, and is careful around her. He doesn’t want to see her in misery and “wishes he could hug Sarah too” pg. 110. Sarah not only understands what her father did was entirely wrong, but she also pursues on with her heart and “is going to tell the whole world on what happened to Jerome” pg. 181.
