Ghost Boys
In the novel “Ghost Boys'' by Jewell Parker Rhodes, the author discussed the theme of relationships throughout the novel. The author mentions many different relationships that take place within the book. First, the author discusses the relationship that includes Jerome the main character and Officer Moore. The novel also mentions the relationship between Jerome and Sarah. Finally, the author talks about the relationship between Sarah and her dad. All of these relationships mentioned prove that the novel has both positive and negative relationships that the main characters must have within the book.

“He didn’t protect me, Everybody in my neighborhood knows cops do whatever they want.” (Page 65, Rhodes). Jerome feels that the officer will not protect people in the neighborhood because they are black proving their relationship is not great. When Jerome got shot by Officer Moore the officer didn't get him help because he was a person of color “Did you react when Jerome Rogers lay wounded on the ground? Did you render aid?” “ No.” (Page 122, Rhodes). Jerome feels that way because there was no real reason why Officer Moore shot him. Jerome is talking to Sarah about her dad, who is Officer Moore and how she should forgive him for what he did. “No I don't hate your dad and you shouldn't either.” (Page 179, Rhodes). Jerome is saying that he doesn't hate Officer Moore but he made a mistake and a really bad mistake. “Maybe I can help you? Help you both? like Wendy helped Peter Pan.” (Page 94, Rhodes). She feels sorry for all the ghost boys so she is trying to figure out a way she could help them. Sarah and Jerome's relationship is pretty good. Her and Jerome were reading articles about his death and Sarah felt sorry for Jerome. “I'm so sorry Jerome, so so sorry, if I could, I would hug you, bring you back to life.” (Page 109, Rhodes). She feels bad for showing him how it happened and seeing him lying dead on the floor and also for Jerome to rewatch that again. Jerome is talking to Sarah because she is trying to spread awareness about people of color and their skin. “You were right, it matters, you seeing me, seeing you, sharing my story.” (Page 181, Rhodes). Jerome was happy and proud of Sarah for spreading awareness about people dying for unfair reasons. Jerome and Sarah had a positive relationship in the novel because Sarah was trying to help Jerome and she shared Jerome’s
