Back in the 1800’s being a women was tough. The women’s job was thought of to be just taking care of the kids and assisting her husband with anything he needed. In the novel Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd the two main topics are slavery and women’s rights. Sarah and Handful are two main characters from this novel and are affected most by the actions of other’s during this time. Sarah and Handful are very different but also have many of the same qualities. Racism is something big that affects both of their lives and changes their way of life. Another is how being a women affects what they want to with life and how it holds them back. A third reason is even though they are very different they both care about each other very deeply. At first Sarah didn’t want to have a slave but after a while she began to like Handful’s company. “You didn’t punish Handful did you?” Sarah asked her mom after Handful had messed up on Sarah’s birthday. This shows how even though at first Sarah didn’t really want Handful and thought she was fine on her own, but her first reaction was to see if she was okay and that she was not punished. Even though Handful could have every reason to hate Sarah she couldn’t find it in her to. She cared about Sarah very deeply because Sarah was the nicest to her anyone has ever been. “You sad about your daddy?” (Kidd 200) Handful said to Sarah after her father’s passing. This shows that Handful really does care for Sarah and about her wellbeing and wanted to make sure she was okay. Even though Handful shouldn’t have a reason to be nice to any white person she had a special spot her heart for Sarah because Sarah has helped her a lot throughout the years and has kept her safe from the clutches of her mother’s
