From 1815 to 1850, many issues occurred including the racial prejudice of African Americans and unfairness towards women. Starting at the beginning of this time period, African Americans were either born into, or later sold into slavery. On the other hand, women were treated unfairly because they had much less rights than men had. For example, women were deprived of their natural rights and were unable to vote, work in the fields, or own property. In Document 1, Bill Bigelow created a document that explained the issues that were affecting women in the United States in 1848. The issues that were included were terrible and rules/laws that no one should be put through. The evidence that can be used to support my subclaim is in the document some of the conditions that were set were “It is extremely difficult for a woman to divorce her husband in most states, most courts grant custody of the children to men, it is considered improper for women to speak in public, until 1839 women were not allowed to own property in any state in the United States, a father can legally make a will appointing a guardian for his children in the event of his death, it is legal for a man to beat his wife, and women may not vote in any state in the union.” This evidence supports my subclaim because, the evidence above shows that women were lessened and did not get the rights that men could. They were unable to do many things and could almost never speak their opinion on a topic. Document 4 is about a speech that was given by Sojourner Truth, a former slave, who escaped in 1826. She was very influential and helped many issues to be resolved in this time period. Although, the issue of women's rights was never resolved in this time period. The evidence that can be used to support my subclaim is in the speech Truth said “These women together ought to be able to turn it back, and get it right side up again!” She really encourages women to work together to gain these natural rights that every single person should have. Also in the speech she says “ I could work as much and eat as much as a man – when I could get it – and bear the whip as well! And ain't I a woman? I have had thirteen children, and seen most all sold off to slavery, and when I cried out with my mother's grief, none but Jesus heard me! And ain't I a woman?”
