Every Resident Advisor (RA) answers the on-call phone with a bit of apprehension, but when the caller tells you that they are concerned that their friend may hurt herself physically, all your nerves stand on edge. It was this experience and others like it that reaffirmed my decision to pursue a career in the Healthcare field with a specific interest in mental health. My life’s journey began on a small multiracial island where we believed and practiced “every creed and race find an equal place,” these words taken from our country’s national anthem. In our multicultural society, religion played a large role in influencing the societal norms and practices which were of a conservative nature.
Their approach to the world, even in the face of terminal diagnoses, is tenacious and inspiring. I want nothing more than to simply be a part of that power. Medicine has the unique ability to save lives, but it can also be draining. Pediatrics is a juxtaposition of levity and critical thinking at the intersection of embryology, genetics, and physiology. Where else can I turn a gown into a Minion costume because a patient is scared of us as we walk in with masks and gowns on?
I am extremely honored to be recognized as a potential member of the National Honor Society (NHS). Being considered to become a member of the NHS means I have accomplished one of my academic and personal goals. I have shown with my GPA that I am a student who goes above and beyond but more than just demonstrating my determination in my academics, I continue to portray this hard work in athletics, my community, and at home. I’m currently a student at San Joaquin Valley College, working towards becoming a certified medical assistant in which I have proficiency in typing skills and accomplished CPR and HIPAA certification. I would love to stay in Michigan and I appreciate that Kalamazoo is a large city with only a forty-minute drive to Lake Michigan beaches. Not to mention that WMed is the only Michigan-based medical school to be voted one of the 50 Most Beautiful Medical Schools. It is also a new institution which allows for innovation by its students.

A career as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is a natural extension of my personal, educational, and research experiences. Although my path to nursing has not been a straight line, every experience that put me on this path has shaped my passion and dedication to psychiatric nursing. After losing loved ones to suicide at a young age, I made a promise to myself and to them that I would dedicate my life to helping individuals struggling with mental illness. This promise led me to study Psychology at UC Berkeley, where I fell in love with clinical research investigating the efficacy of treatments for mental illness.

His role as an oncologist has profoundly influenced the manner in which I plan to practice medicine in the future: with respect, compassion, and empathy for my patients. It was my observation of his interactions with cancer surviving patients that first inspired me to pursue medicine.
