Doctor’s Diaries Worksheet What do you see as some of the stresses medical students deal with? How do they react to dissection of cadavers? During the film each student shared one common stressor, the work load. During the first two years of medical school, the work load is heavy, a lot of reading textbooks and memorizing material. I could imagine this heavy homework load initially would be very discouraging, as a medical student. The students want to have hands on experience, but before they can learn through touch, they must learn the basics through reading. Other stress factors I noticed during the film is the strain on relationships. Yes, the homework load is overwhelming, especially when you try and manage a boyfriend/girlfriend, children, and friends. The average student enters medical school at age 24. Unfortunately, at the age of 25 is when the average woman meets her potential life-long partner. This means that during the second year of medical school, a student is expected to balance class, lab, 5+ hours of homework daily, the program becoming more competitive, and a relationship. Everyone hopes to find love, its just difficult that these two monumental events are taking place near one another. Physicians are under constant stress throughout school, residency, and trying to find a permanent job. As we saw in the film, many relationships don’t last under this strenuous pressure. Studies have found that healthcare professionals experience a significantly higher rate of divorce, compared to other professions. Since physicians are needed in the community every day throughout the year, this makes vacations very difficult. In other professions, workers are able to take time off to relax. As a doctor who has patients daily, taking time for relaxation and self-care is more
