Does Every Protagonist Need an Antagonist? Ed Boone is a good dad whose mistakes are completely understandable; what can never be questioned is his unconditional love and commitment to his son, which allows Christopher to grow in spite of the numerous challenges he faces. Having a child with autism is not easy but that doesn’t give the child an excuse to misbehave and do whatever he wants. “The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time” makes it seem as if Christopher is the protagonist mainly since he is going through Autism while saying Ed Boone is the Antagonist because he killed Wellington and lied about Christopher’s mom. The novel tends to exaggerate in every action the father does, however ignores Christopher’s action. Boone did everything he could to try and make Christopher happy. Around the middle of the novel the dad got pissed at Christopher and hit him, but then he realized what he had done. He stated “I love you very much, Christopher. Don’t ever forget that. And I know I lose my rag occasionally. I know I get angry. I know I shout. And I know I shouldn’t. But I do it because I don’t want to see you get hurt. Do you understand?”(137.86) Every parent has moments where at times they lose their anger. But While his father says that Christopher only says “ I don’t know”. His father clothes him, feeds him and provides shelter for him and that was all Christopher could come up with. There were countless times the father told Christopher how much he loved him. But there were almost no times when Christopher showed any affection for his father at all. His dad took him to the zoo, Christopher didn’t even bother saying thank you. Then when Christopher found out that his father was hiding letters from him he went all out.
