It’s an argument we’ve all heard before and there are more than a few books that have tackled the subject. But what’s different from even the last three years is just how widespread the media has become. Today’s teens spend an average of 10 hours and 45 minutes absorbing media in just one day, which includes the amount of time spent watching TV, listening to music, watching movies, reading magazines and using the internet. This is a generation that’s been raised watching reality TV – observing bodies transformed on Extreme Makeover; faces taken apart and pieced back together on I Want a Famous Face. They are, as Tina Fey puts it, bombarded by "a laundry list of attributes women must have to qualify as beautiful.”
What is the Perfect American? What is the “Perfect American?” Well, this is something that a lot of people might think they know the answer to. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and with that comes varying perceptions on what the perfect American is like.
All individuals are not born perfect. Every individual has their flaws that has a positive or negative impact to those around them and the society. All individuals have flaws that can or cannot hide from the rest of the world. Scholars of psychology argue that obsessions cause individuals to achieve perfection and can have a positive or negative aspect to an individuals’ life. Perfection is the conditions, state, or quality of being free as possible from all flaws or defects.
We would all most likely want to live in an ideal society also known as utopia, however, what does an ideal society actually mean to you? An ideal society would be the perfect society to live in. Everybody has their own views and ideas, so the idea of the perfect society may be different to other people, someone else 's idea of the perfect society may be considered a dystopian society to another person. The society in Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian society.
Intro: Nathaniel Hawthorne’s fictional short story “The Birthmark” and The Twilight Zone’s darkly romantic episode “Eye of the Beholder” both use gothic elements and delve into the realm of science to explore concepts of beauty and perfection. Body image has become such a big issue among society especially females mostly. In my opinion, there is no such a thing as the ideal body shape, because everyone is beautiful in their own individual way.
The media portrays these unrealistic standards to men and women of how women should look, which suggests that their natural face is not good enough. Unrealistic standards for beauty created by the media is detrimental to girls’ self-esteem because it makes women feel constant external pressure to achieve the “ideal look”, which indicates that their natural appearance is inadequate. There has been an increasing number of women that are dissatisfied with themselves due to constant external pressure to look perfect. YWCA’s “Beauty at Any Cost” discusses this in their article saying that, “The pressure to achieve unrealistic physical beauty is an undercurrent in the lives of virtually all women in the United States, and its steady drumbeat is wreaking havoc on women in ways that far exceed the bounds of their physical selves” (YWCA).
Whether it’s magazine covers, instagram, twitter, on television or just on the world wide web in general, everywhere we look we see stunning models. Models that are incredibly thin and can look good in anything. Our society is obsessed with how perfect they look, yet at the end of the day women everywhere looks in the mirror and doesn’t see the body of the girl she sees on social media. Even though women come in all shapes and sizes in nature, the expectation to have a skinny, perfect body just seems to be the expectation for our society nowadays. Society puts too much pressure on females to have the perfect body.
That is just how humans are programmed and made, perfection is just not part of the secret recipe, if you are perfect then you are not human. It is a fact that we are the ones driving through the journey of our respective lives, but life itself is not perfect, so how can you be? Every person has their own strengths and weaknesses, that is why every person has their own skills and talents. If everyone is perfect then everyone's is their own lawyers, doctors, teachers. Everyone makes mistakes, including you, your friends and your family.
