Technology Is Changing Our Lives With the rising number of technological advancements in todays society, their have been many improvements and set backs that come along with it. In the past few decades’ humans have created many different improvements for our everyday life. These improvements include, increased production of robots to better improve our lives, increase in communication technologies, which help improve the link between people and advancements in medical technologies to help strengthen our health. These examples also have set back which include, decrease in jobs due to replacement by technology or a decrease in human interaction due to face-to-face communication. She begins to tell the reader how since the invention of the mobile phone or texting specifically, there has been evidence that supports texting is causing a decrease in writing skills. For example, She brings up the fact from a USA article from 2008, they shows many complaints about texting including a study from the National Center of Education Statistics, which says, “25% of high school students seniors are not proficient writers”. Many believe that this is because of students using acronyms instead of actual words to express their thoughts in a shortened version. Others believe that texting is beneficial because it allows students to get motivated in writing by practicing. Cullington preforms her own research into the issue and comes out with an overall answer. She finds that texting has little to no impact on writing because students understand that text speech is not acceptable in a school setting. Overall, she believes that technology is not having a bad impact on writing and that other factors are the cause of this. First, some people believe that robots and technology will take all of our jobs. This has been shown the opposite of that affect according to author Kevin Kelly who explains that although some jobs were taken from people, many more jobs were created in many different fields. Second, many people believe that robots have been shown to be smarter than humans and that this could negatively impact our future. However, author Clive Thompson believes that if we work together with technology itself, far greater things can be achieved with co-existence. Finally, many people believe that communication technology has a negative impact on students due to text speech. They believe that students have decreased in their ability to write due to abbreviations created for shorter and faster wording. However, Author Cullington shows that even though students have been shown to participate in different techniques for texting, students have shown they know when it is acceptable to write in text form and when it is not. Students also eventually show they loose interest in this form of text speech by the time they reach college. Overall, since the creation of technology, us as humans have used technology positively even though some may say it has major disadvantages, the advantages out way
