The populous in Fahrenheit 451 are very dead in a way due to their leaders and law makers. This government in Ray Bradbury’s book obtains and maintains power over the populous by forcing people to think a certain way. They do this through many different ways, such as the media. Almost every single county in the world has rules which are also known as laws. Laws control what most of the population can and cannot do. If you break one or more of these set laws, you will receive a punishment in return. In the book, it states that reading or having a book in your possession is against the law, therefore making most of the population not even own a book. In Fahrenheit 451, the TV tells what you should think and it seems so right and you have no time to process what you just heard so you go with whatever they told you. This is an example on how the government maintains the power through media. A part of the problem actually started with the people. The government never actually used any kind of force against the people to try and take control but what did happen was that society gave up their freedom and their will to think for convenience and happiness. They thought this type of world will be better because there will be no more competition and frequent challenges in their lives. They gained control pretty easily but now they will need to maintain that power. To do this, the government will ban things like books and psychological conversations which exercises the brain but without these intellectual discussions, people will just fall deeper in the already made hole by the government which will make everything worse.
