Heinrich Heine once said, “when words leave off, music begins.” These words are the illumination for my sought out career. When the audience cannot react to the emotions that the actors attempt to portray in a film, I want my music to bridge the connection of a viewer and the atmosphere of the film.
I saw my favorite band, Florence And The Machine, in the summer of 2016. I found myself in a room full of people who could escape reality with the simple act of playing a song. For the majority of us, the song was Dog Days Are Over. The gentle plucking of the harp began to precipitate over us leading to a grand feeling of euphoria. Instantly, we knew it was our song. A wave of the orchestra swoons in fighting back and forth between the piano much like the relationship between societal views and love. The song, The End, is played as the credits roll at the end of the movie Carol. The tensions between the instruments become at ease once they triumph over their mindset on what would be societal views on same sex relationships in the 1950s. The Characters, Carol and Therese, are introduced nearing Christmas. Upon meeting, their innocents creates a passion that is vital to be told through music. Two very different melodies are played by the woodwinds. The first one represents Carol. It carries a lower tone and a more complex rhythm to its opponent which is Therese. Her voice is carried with soft spoken words and a simple melody. The tension rises as the song comes to a close. Carol and Therese can no longer be together and as result, the melodies fade. Like a candle being burnt out, the smoke of the instruments exiting drone leaves not only the listener, but the viewer of the film, wanting more. Carter Burwell has created an oscar nominated score for a timeless film. I can recall the first time I watched the Carol and how I could still feel the emotion portrayed in the movie as the ending credits lit my dark living room.
