The definition of value is: Consider (someone or something) to be important or beneficial; have a high opinion of. To Kill a Mockingbird is set during the Great Depression in Alabama. The town of Maycomb is like most places in the south, but is changing throughout the book. Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird demonstrates that the value of a person isn’t determined by what’s on the surface. One of the most significant characters that represents this is Atticus. For example, Jem and Scout are seen as an old man who can’t do anything. Atticus, however, shows he isn’t just a boring old man when he shoots Tim Johnson, the mad dog. This quote shows that just because Atticus is old, doesn’t mean he can’t do anything. Atticus was actually called ‘Ol One Shot Finch’ when he was younger, having the sharpest shot in Maycomb. Therefore, Atticus’ age demonstrates the theme of To Kill a Mockingbird. Another significant character that demonstrates this is Dolphus Raymond. Dolphus Raymond is always seen as a drunken man as he passes by the town. Dolphus Raymond, who actually just drinks Coca-Cola, acts drunk because people don’t like how he lives so he protects himself with a reason why he does. A quote that shows this best is, “Wo-oh yes, you mean why do I pretend? Well, it’s very simple,” he said. “Some folks don’t–like the way I live. Now I could say the hell out of ‘em, I don’t care if they don’t like it. I do say I don’t care if they don’t like it, right enough–but I don’t say the hell with ‘em, see?” (Lee 228). This quote suggests that Dolphus Raymond just wants to live how he lives, but others don’t allow it, so he hides why he really does it. Therefore, Dolphus Raymond demonstrates Lee’s theme.
