Abstract
Any moment, a terrorist attack could be carried out. In today's globalized society, understanding the threat from domestic terrorist groups is of paramount importance. Terrorist organizations emerge from many different areas around the world to include domestically each with their own goals and motivations. While some terrorist organizations focus on worldwide influence, others strive for local communities. Domestic terrorist groups are occurring more often than transnational terrorist incidents and their actions can have a significant impact on both national security and public safety.

In response to 9/11, the American government significantly increased its counterterrorism measures (Bjelopea, 2017). International terrorism has been prioritized which has targeted Muslims (German, M. & Robinson, S, n.d.). By understanding the threat from domestic terrorist groups, law enforcement agencies and government institutions can effectively devise strategies to prevent and respond to acts of terrorism. Analyzing the threat from domestic terrorist groups allows for proactive measures to be taken in mitigating potential risks and ensuring national security. Moreover, understanding the threat from domestic terrorist groups enables policymakers to allocate resources appropriately and prioritize counterterrorism efforts (Bjelopera, 2017). Additionally, understanding domestic terrorism threat is crucial for maintaining public safety and confidence. It allows for the implementation of targeted law enforcement initiatives and intelligence sharing among agencies at both domestic and international levels. “The best defenses against violent extremist ideologies are well-informed and equipped families, local communities, and local institutions” (The White House, 2011, p. 2). Moreover, understanding the threat from domestic terrorist groups is crucial for effectively identifying and targeting potential threats before they materialize into acts of violence. While there is not an official list for domestic terrorist groups, lawmakers have considered officializing the process to have a bigger oversight on these organizations. The process enhances federal as well as state and local levels to combat domestic terrorist groups (Bjelopera, 2017).
