Intervention programs, their weaknesses and how to make them better:
Due to the prominence of domestic violence in society, intervention programs have been put in place within the United States to better combat such abuse. Different service’s/ intervention programs such as hotlines, shelters, counselors, police officers and other resources are now more available to the people involved in domestic violence.
In 1974, the first shelter in the United States for battered women opened in, St. Paul, Minnesota, since then over 5,000 other shelters have opened their doors. While Shelter’s are there to help the victims of society, they also have their weaknesses. The shelters can be found to be inadequate and lack to meet the needs of all survivors.

For instance, many rural areas lack facilities and resources for victims. Therefore domestic violence programs should establish and maintain working relationships with state domestic violence coalitions and also utilize partner programs. Domestic Violence programs and Child Protective Services should develop local and regional relationships so that both services can partner together on specific cases so that it can be more easily resolved.
Something that can be considered to be one of the most important tools of the domestic violence programs are the employees that deal with these cases. Weaknesses in domestic violence programs can occur because not all employees have adequate training to efficiently deal with a domestic violence case. Furthermore employees need to be receiving more rigorous training that further deepens the employee’s views of domestic violence. Furthermore domestic violence programs can lay out a strong foundation of zero tolerance by better informing young children. This is something that can be instrumental to the minimization of domestic violence. To demonstrate the importance, one must understand that if domestic violence is not accurately identified, there will be consequences. Research shows that program/ caseworker efforts to improve family involvement can make the abuse worse toward the child or non offending parent. Outside program involvement needs to be confidential with the child and conducted in a way that will make the child feel secure. This can be done by people coming and talking to young children as well as creating safe place facilities/ shelters for children to stay at. This is very important because Domestic violence was found to be the number one reason children run away from home. When a child runs away they are subjected to the dangers of the world and do not have the support that they need. These children can be further subjected dangers such as but not limited to; kidnapping, prostitution, homelessness, and drug abuse. Furthermore, it is very important that more shelters be put in place to limit the amount of danger and devastation in that child’s
