Donatello; A Successful Sculptor

Donatello created many sculptures that showed different techniques he used during the early Renaissance and many recognize him as the greatest artist during those times. Donatello provided many new techniques to the Renaissance sculpting. He portrayed realism through many of his sculptures. Donatello also used new textures in his artwork that helped make a three dimensional look to the sculpture. Another technique that Donatello used was perspective which helped the sculptures show emotion. This influenced many people to continue to sculpt and they did this by using his methods. For example, Andrea Mantegna was influenced greatly by Donatello because she created the first exaggerated perspective (Earls 61). His success in making these breathtaking sculptures and with different depths added sophistication that no other artist had done before. He is “the founder of modern sculpture due to his innovation of optical illusion”(Krystal 11). These illusions he created caused him to be very innovative. He “created entirely new remarkably innovative sculptural optical accomplishments in atmospheric perspective know as relievo schiacito”(Earls 60). His use of atmospheric perspective in his sculptures also shows how he was successful. Donatello had many sculptures that show he was accomplished in the area of perspective because he was very detailed in his work by making a lot of flat surfaces look three dimensional. Donatello was a very accomplished and a quality sculptor due to his ability to make sculptures look real, his textures in his sculptures and his ability to make things three-dimensional. He portrayed realism in the sculpture St. George, because of the details in his eye. Various textures were shown in St. George Slaying the Dragon. Also, perspective was shown in The Feast of Herod because of the three dimensional look to the artwork.
