Is There a Meaning? Permanent body decorations are permanent marks that can be added to the body, such as tattoos and piercings. Tattoos has been around for probably more than 2000 years, today more than ever they are considered to be a big part of the modern fashion. A hundred years ago tattoos weren’t as popular among the western civilization as they are today. They only became popular around the 1970s. Before that if one would choose to decorate their body with tattoos, they would have to deal with constantly being stared at, but not the fun kinda stare, the judgmental kinda stare, and don’t forget the occasional preaching every now and then. People often get a permanent body decoration such as tattoos to remind them of something or someone that is important to them, something that they wish to stay with them forever. Another reason to why people choose to get such permanent marks is the desire to be unique, different and challenge the fashion and beauty norms. Andres Martin wrote an article called “On Teenagers and Tattoos” in the article the writer talk about teenager’s interest with tattoos. In his article he writes “Seeking individuation, tattooed adoles¬cents can become unambiguously demarcated from others and singled out as unique” (Martin 1). Even as a stupid fashion trend that has been praised by teenagers since the 70s (a pretty long time for a trend if you ask me), it is still amazing how you can just have actual art works stay on your body forever. The problem is that for everything, good or bad, there is an exception. The superiority of getting a personal tattoo, something that is sentimental to us is that we might not view fashion and art the way we used to. Our taste in fashion changes all the time and tattoos basically stay forever, which would often lead to people regretting receiving a permanent tattoos for fashion reasons. We don’t stay young forever and it is harder to look cool when you are fifty. Although some people manage to look young and rock visible tattoos even in their early sixties, if they can’t, they will end up regretting receiving visible tattoos since that limits them in other areas in life. When it comes to tattoos that have a bigger meaning, something more personal rather than generally fashionable, the likelihood of regretting getting it is much lower.
