What is Doublespeak? Doublespeak is an old language that grew in the past and show the positive aspects of negativity. William Lutz wrote a book called, “Doublespeak: From Revenue Enhancement to Terminal Living” (The World of Doublespeak 347). He explains what doublespeak is and provides examples for each kind of doublespeak. Lutz was born in 1940. He has a Bachelor degree, a Masters degree, a Ph.D., and a JD from different universities. Lutz has written, co-written, or edited other books from different authors. “Doublespeak” was a best-seller in the past. Lutz to give people knowledge about doublespeak and why he is against doublespeak. The first one is the euphemism, “an inoffensive or positive word of phrase used to avoid a harsh, unpleasant, or distasteful reality” (Lutz 348). It means to use another word to explain a problem positively so a person does not get angry. From Lutz’s example, he explains euphemism by mentioning “in 1984 US State Department announced that it would no longer use the word ‘killing’ in its annual report on the status of human rights in countries around the world. Instead, it would use the phrase “unlawful or arbitrary deprivation of life” (Lutz 349). Also, Lutz made the first kind of doublespeak similar to logos by explaining that “the euphemism functions here not just to protect the feelings of another person, but to communication also your concern for that person’s feelings during a period of mourning” (Lutz 348). So, logos look similar to this definition, which is the what author wants the reader to feel and get involved in the article. Lutz clarifies the dangers of doublespeak by clarifying dangers with information. According to Lutz “Doublespeak is not the product of carelessness of sloppy thinking, Indeed, most doublespeak is the product of clear thinking and is carefully designed and constructed to appear to communicate when in fact it does not” (Lutz 352). It means the doublespeak was hard to understand for some people and not clear for some people also, so doublespeak is a way to communicate, but it is hard for some people to understand
