What is the backstory of the Roman Empire?
In 50 BCE Rome began. Rome lasted until 200 CE due to many reasons. There were 3 main reasons that had led to the downfall of Rome. Military mistakes, economic and civic decay, and political instability are the main reasons for the downfall of Rome. These 3 flaws had caused
Rome’s defense to weaken and allow easier attacks and takeovers.
Military Mistakes
Before the year 400 CE soldiers wore breastplates and helmets as part of their armor for safety reasons. When armor is taken away, it allows entry points to place wounds.
When the military got lazy, they caused the armor to downgrade, meaning the empire’s defense had a weak point that was too obvious to hide.
Economic and Civic Decay
Another major contribution to the downfall of the Roman Empire was economic and civic decay.
According to an excerpt of a historical text written by Priscus, Roman ambassador to the Huns,
449 CE, “ The climax of the misery is to have to pay in order to obtain justice. '' In another's word the laws were unfair and based on wealth and money. Because of the injustice, Rome lost its citizens and allies, this contributed to the downfall of its empire.
Political Instability
Lastly would be political instability. Each ruler/emperor had what we call haters. Between
235-285 CE, there were 19 rulers, 3 of which died of natural causes, this includes illnesses like the Plague. Out of the 19 rulers, 13 were assassinated or possibly assassinated. Rulers had many haters, and lots were citizens or close companions. Due to all of these deaths of rulers happening, other rulers had seen it as Rome being weak and open for grab.
