Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen is a story written about a boy named Cole Matthews who is a nuisance to everyone around him. This delinquent has been in trouble with the law since he was a mere child. His latest crime? Almost beating a kid to death after a boy named Peter told on him for robbing a hardware store. Cole is sent to court where they will decide his future.
My opinion is that Touching Spirit Bear is a dramatic and breathtaking book where people learn to heal, forgive, and trust. Cole, the main character, is trying to live life to the fullest and find himself. He makes poor decisions... He is the bully... Will he ever learn from his mistakes?
In the book Touching Spirit Bear, a native boy named Chase Matthews, is constantly getting into trouble. Chase gets sent to a live on an island by himself, as punishment for a year where he couldn't hurt anybody but runs into an unlikely friend. Chase makes many mistakes but learns from them when he's on the island. This book has taught me a lot of stuff that comes into my life every day Chase burns down the small hut and all of the food that was left for him, tries to kill the spirit bear and when he talks to the spirit Bear. When Chase is dropped off by the elders on this remote island, he tries to act as though nothing can hurt him.
In the novel, Tunes for Bears to Dance To, there are three people coping with trauma, and they all do it differently. First of all, Mr Levine is a very kind hearted man, who also happens to be a Holocaust survivor. Mr. Levine is a Jewish man, who was placed in a concentration camp. He was separated from his family, who all ended up dying. To cope with his trauma, Mr. Levine carves part of his village every day.
“There in the palm of his hand was a wad of hair. Cole stared. The hair was white. All white. ‘It’s true,’ he whispered.
When Cole arrives on the island, he is consumed by anger, bitterness, and an unwillingness to change. As soon as Edwin, a Tlingit elder, and Garvey leave, Cole sets fire to his constructed shelter and supplies, and jumps into the ocean to swim to freedom. Caught by the rising tide, he is unable to escape the island. In his first few days on the island, he has several encounters with a majestic, white bear called a Spirit Bear, and he is determined to kill it out of anger. One day, when he sees the bear, he stabs it with his knife and a makeshift spear.
Book Review I think the book “Touching Spirit Bear” book is a extremely action packed & dramatic book. In this book two teenage boys (Peter and Cole) have a depressing start to life , on the other hand they starts to explore themselves and find who they truly are. DRAMA & ACTION. Those are the two main words. If you like drama and action i bet you would like this book.
Sometimes people need a certain experience to change their point of view. In Touching Spirit Bear, written by Ben Mikaelsen, a violent teenager named Cole Matthews is sent on a mission to redeem himself, and faces radical experiences that ultimately change his whole mindset. He commits the crime of beating up a fellow peer, then is banished to an island as a punishment for his actions by the Circle Justice; a committee that serves as an alternative form of justice in the Tlingit culture. He then faces difficult and even deadly challenges. As a result of this experience, he changes from his ungovernable, supercilious ways as he comes to strong and sudden realizations of how wrong he was, and he learns how to be an honest and forgiving human being.
The Synopsis that I gathered from Haas and Flowers’ “Rhetorical Reading Strategies and the Construction of Meaning” was none the less another interesting read. Experienced readers might come to understand that both reading and writing can be “context-rich, situational, and have constructive acts”. Though a large number of students may find reading and writing more or less to be an exchange of valued or non-valued information. Continuing on, multiple studies that have been conducted have also found that on average 77 percent of experienced readers tend to use content strategies to expand their knowledge of the reading. These strategies usually include vigorous annotations of the reading/writing that have been shown to improve the readers/writers’ comprehension of the material.
Previously, in Dr. Boyce’s literacy class, we rigorously studied and learned how to apply reading strategies to specific texts. Thus, the text ‘Stupid Lady From Denver’ by Chris Tovani (2004) struck me as especially familiar. Everything that was stated in the article brought back memory after memory of all the various reading strategies we covered last semester. Tovani (2004) states that “Good readers separate themselves from struggling readers when they recognize that they are confused and do something to repair meaning”, which rings especially true to my memory as well (p. 5). She encouraged us to seek out challenging portions of the text that confused us, use our marks to label what was unknown, and then use the strategies such as ReQuest,
The next step was going over how to describe students viewpoints by focusing on the characters actions, how they feel, and what they see through the story. When reading the book, I insured to make pauses
The Importance of Storytelling in Cherokee Culture The Cherokee people, like all Native American tribes, possess an extensive, ancient oral history. Before European contact and the creation of the Cherokee syllabary, the only way the Cherokees could pass on the legends within their history was by word of mouth or in other words through storytelling. Their stories included justifications for the origin of Earth and mankind, good human morals and values, and Cherokee culture rituals. Diane Glancy, author of Pushing The Bear, does a great job in conveying the importance of storytelling in Cherokee culture.
The book Ghost of Spirit Bear is a sequel to the book Touching Spirit Bear. I enjoyed this book because it has a good story and plot. While this book is not as adventurous or moving as the first book Ghost of Spirit Bear still has a good plot and creates vivid pictures in your mind while reading. I prefered Touching Spirit Bear over this book because it has more adventure and a more shocking story. The book consists mainly of the same characters but more were added when Peter and Cole go to school.
Guy Vanderhaeghe, author of “Dancing Bear”, explores both internal and external conflicts that man faces within society and within himself. Vanderhaeghe’s writing is intended to point out the importance and struggle of survival in literature. His work also presents the lives of those living troubled or dealing with a disability (Heath). The struggles of man versus man and man versus society are strongly spoken of within “Dancing Bear”. Vanderhaeghe describes a story of emotional battles of survival.
Grizzly Man is a documentary film released in 2005 and followed a bear activist named Timothy Treadwell, he decided that he wanted to live with bears in Alaska. For thirteen years, during the summer month, Treadwell camped in Katmai National Park and Preserve in Alaska. During this time he had to hide from the authorities, he was on a personal mission in order to better protect the population of grizzly bears. He believed the park service rangers were not doing their job well and it was his duty to go out into the wilderness. The film depicts the past by including the original footage from Treadwell, this is because he always had the movie camera with him.
