Dr. Frankenstein by Mary Shelly is a story about a very smart scientist who discovers the secrets of “life and death”, and creates a “new species” of man and learns how to renew life. As a result he reconstructs a monster entirely made out of other people's deceased body parts. When Dr. Victor Frankestein sees the monster come to life and wake up, he becomes overwhelmed with fear and flees, abandoning the monster. The monster, realizing his creator has abandoned him, causes him to also flee. Over time, the monster becomes more and more angry and begins to seek revenge on Dr. Frankenstein and his family. The science portrayed in Dr. Frankenstein's story was seen as extreme for its time, but we can see connections in modern science today. …show more content…

Frankenstein is doing things not so different from what we do today in hospitals; such as transplant surgery and heart surgery to name a few. In the 1950s, with no other medical options for incurable diseases and other medical conditions, teams of scientists and surgeons started the field of organ transplant with the first successful kidney transplant in a human (Nordham 2). These transplant surgeries opened the door to the idea of unconventional surgery. (Nordham 4), Since national recording began by the “Organ Procurement and Transplant Network” in 1988 here in the United States over 800,000 patients have had their lives saved, or significantly improved. Almost a million people have benefited from these surgeries that would have been looked at as witchcraft 100 years ago. The main and obvious difference between modern science today and Dr. Frankenstein methods are, he used old body parts from the deceased, strange chemicals and a mysterious spark of energy (electricity) to create a monster and today's modern science of course does not. In today's medical community, organ donors that die have their organs protected in a sterile environment under close watch to ensure their integrity before finding their way to a patient in …show more content…

Irresponsible scientists can create dangerous things and do dangerous research and procedures which can have very big consequences, even today. For example scientists are creating clones, artificial intelligence, brain chips and many other things we may not even know about. With any of these ideas, if done irresponsibly can be very bad for everyone. Imagine if you yourself were cloned and the clone was trying to take over your life or do something that could cause you harm? AI has a very realistic chance of taking over control of humans if not done carefully…could you imagine? Luckily, most science is done very cautiously, but we need to continuously be careful when it comes to these matters. Modern science and medicine is making big advances every day and we are still learning about all of it. Scientists have to learn from these stories and be cautious as to what they create and be responsible with whatever they decide to
