Individuals growing up in today’s society tend to view the Cold War era as a time of “happy days”. Instead, many political scientists just like Dr. Franke view the Cold War era in two very different perspectives that allow students to learn that the Cold War was in fact a time of fear tribalism, bigotry, ambition and demagoguery. Dr. Franke stated his reasoning for exposing students to the Cold War era in this light is to ensure that they will gain a better understanding of the Cold War era. Nonetheless, as stated above Dr. Franke want students to view the Cold War era in a sense of reality . Franke set up his lecture by asking the students two key questions that will assure students learning regarding how the Cold War era was a time of troubles and controversy. The first question Dr. Franke started the class off was by asking, “why protect speech in a democratic society?” By starting the class off with this higher order question it allows students to take control of their learning, while the teacher is able to direct the lesson in a manner that will engage students learning, criterial thinking skills and higher-order thinking. Franke posed was “why is speech threatened during war time?”. This question, undoubtable will spark some controversy within your classroom because it allows the students to see the reality that perhaps the once perfect idea of the poodle skirts, grease lighten and peace era of the 1950s was in reality overshadow by the controversy of societies first amendment being threatened. Dr. Franke, specifically gave an example of using the episode on the Vietnam War and how there was numerous of anti-war demonstrates widespread acts of civil disobedience and instance of serious political violence. Through this uprising, it leads to domestic spying and prior restraint. These two examples demonstrated how the speech was in doubly being threatened during war time. They took away people’s liberty to publish, say and protest in a fair and equal way. Through this example in the episode of the Vietnam war, it relates to the Cold War era in regard to why the speech was threatened during war time. For instance, in Dr. Franke’s second approach to how society views the cold war era, he brought to the table to the idea of the separation of power mechanism break down. This concept revolves around the co-branches which implies watch and check the abuses of one another.
