The novel, The Strange case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde written by Robert Louis Stevenson in the year 1866 is about a physician, Henry Jekyll who creates a potion that brings his evil side to life. The potion makes Dr.Jekyll look a little different and act different, he even names his evil side. He names it Edward Hyde, or Mr. Hyde. He names it Hyde (same as hide) because it is his hidden side. This novel is relevant to today’s readers because it presents the issue that was running through the 20th century and still present today in the 21st century.There is one confusion if not most, all readers have about Dissociative identity disorder criminals jail or asylum. Dr.Jekyll killed MP Sir Denvers Carew with his cane and trampled over a little girl when he was in Hyde’s control . By the circumstances, it may be easy to believe that Dr. Jekyll was innocent and this all was the doing of the malevolent Mr.Hyde. Dr. Jekyll was being used by Mr.Hyde to commit this crime and thus, Dr.Jekyll would never kill on his own will. Hyde was in control, poor Jekyll could not even have his own thoughts. He is such a well known man throughout society, a doctor, who literally helps people stay alive and healthy. In reality, that is the kind of image Dr.Jekyll made of himself in society, a well-loved, well off and very respectable man. In reality, Dr.Jekyll was 100% capable to think about what he was doing, “ I was the first that could thus plod in the public eye with a load of genial respectability, and in a moment, like a schoolboy, strip off these lendings and spring headlong into the sea of liberty (Stevenson 130).” Dr.Jekyll here explains in his full statement how he can walk in society with a great reputation and gain respect from others, and at the same time, throw away the respect to do what he truly wants, he used the word “liberty” meaning to have freedom within a cruel society. Dr.Jekyll can walk in society everyday with the greatest reputation and in the same night, do whatever he wants without hurting his reputation in front of society. Same to relate with DID criminals, they too have very well knowledge of what crimes they are commiting. That is why the court does not accept DID as an excuse to insanity in asylum and puts them straight to jail or death penalty. Insanity is only valid for criminals who are mentally disabled, people who have a visible issue with no common sense and conscience to think over their actions. The strange thing about DID criminals is that they claim to have amnesia and yet remember what exact personalities they have and what personality did what. That proves that even if they have “DID” then they are able to prevent themselves from performing those actions and are not capable of using DID as an excuse. This can be related straight to the criminal Billy Miligan (Criminal that the movie Split was based off). He was arrested in 1977 at the age 27 for robbery, and kidnapping and assault of 3 university girls (Ponti). He was diagnosed with DID by famous psychiatrist, Dr. Cornia Wilbur (Ponti). Yes, the same psychiatrist of Shirley Mason from Sybil (Ponti). He was also seen by 8 other psychiatrists. Milligan had named 24 personalities he had and gave himself no guilt (Ponti). He said “Ragen” did the robberies and “Adalana” did the kidnapping and assaulting of the 3 girls (Ponti). He was completely aware of what he was doing and knew the circumstances. Miligan, supposedly lied that his
