Define: Nerd When one defines a nerd, you would think of an awkward and unsocial person who wears dorky glasses and tucked in clothing. Over the years, the definition of the word “nerd” has evolved into several forms and meanings. Nerd should be classified as an intellectual being who excels in the technical field or is passionate about a certain hobby because intelligence is more important despite that person’s appearance. Nerds should be based on one trait: intelligence. Intelligence in the technical area or any hobby that they are passionate about. It should not be based on two traits: a person’s intellectual status and their unstylish clothing or image. Firstly, where and how did the term “nerd” become about? In the year 1950, “nerd” was first used and define as one of the many oddly named creatures in the titular zoo on Dr. Seuss’ If I Ran the Zoo book. People should label nerds more for their inner perspectives rather than their outer appearance. Nerds should not be based on stereotypes. Just because a person wears glasses and/or tucked in clothing (often with suspenders) does not mean they are automatically a nerd. Who knows that is probably their fashion style? Being called a nerd discourages intelligence and achievements, the “nerds” are being bullied because of their passion and fashion style that it affects their motivation to be part of the typical “nerd” activities like in the science, math, engineering, and technology fields (“Yamrus”).
