The article Dr. Steve Perry’s Tips for a Better Education System, written by Kira Walton was a valuable and honest read. The article commences with a brief introduction about who Dr. Perry is and his accomplishments. Dr. Perry is the author of Push Has Come to Shove and most known as the founder and principle of headline-making Capital Magnet School. The school with the reputation of sending one hundred percent of it’s mostly minority students to four-year colleges after graduation. Personally, I found all of his tips to be useful and accurate except the tip pertaining to school being held year round. I’ve attended public school my whole life and summer vacations have always been available and eagerly anticipated. A break is necessary and it’s a time rejuvenate and perhaps visit family and go on vacation. Enjoy activities you can’t necessarily do during the school year. Learning and extending your education shouldn’t and doesn’t have to stop during these breaks. One can take classes, read books, get a job, etc. All of which can better prepare you for the future. What I did agree with is his other four points. Tip number one discusses the need for a modernized course of study. Likewise, hiring teachers that will adjust their teaching styles to accommodate to the kid’s interest and needs. From personal experience I can see this being extremely helpful because when assigned books and readings that interest me I’m more willing and eager to comply.
