On May 11, 1925, Mr. William Glasser was born to his father, Ben and his mother, Betty (source). Mr. Glasser grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and was an individual that had loved learning and was well-educated. He had obtained his bachelor’s degree from Case Western Reserve University in chemical engineering (source), but soon discovered this was not what he wanted to do for a career. Therefore, he went on to further his education and he earned his master’s degree in 1945, with the focus on clinical psychology (source). However, this was still not enough for Mr. Glasser, so he went back to school to pursue his medical degree. Glasser had founded his Institute for Reality Therapy, many individuals became interested in his approach to therapy. Therefore, one of his colleagues, Mr. Robert E. Wubbolding had been approached by Dr. Glasser to be the first director of the Institute of Reality Therapy (source). Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Wubbolding had been an author, teacher, and one that had strong beliefs and agreed with Dr. Glasser’s philosophies regarding reality therapy. Dr. Wubbolding was focused and wanted to be sure that he was practicing therapy in a way that one would described as being universal across the variety of cultures and respectful to all types of individuals. In addition, Dr. Wubbolding had adopted some of Dr. Glasser’s teachings, particularly about choice theory and how important our choices shape our destiny and future outcomes. Dr. Wubbolding also asserted that, all individuals have some internal motivators that contribute to the life choices we make, to fulfill the five basic needs of survival. During the holidays, I typically tend to reflect on how my clients are doing, particularly the clients that suffer from depression or do not have anyone to spend the holidays with. Before I shut down my computer for the end of the day, I received a referral from a local non-profit agency requesting that a client that I used to see on and off for about three years as his licensed clinical social worker (LCSW). This client is Mr. William Gagne, but would rather be called Bill as this puts him more at ease and makes him feel comfortable. Bill, is a single, Caucasian male who is 43 years of age, and has been unemployed for the past eight years. Bill is a veteran of the Marine Corps. and served for three years.
