Dramatic monologue is a technique used by many poets and writers to allow one character to speak directly to another character continuously and uninterrupted. When a writer uses this technique, it invites the reader into the intimacy of the character’s private relationship with one another. The monologue used by Stuart Dybek’s speaker in “We Didn’t” replays an incident from their past.
