Try to imagine walking into a clothing store and everything you see is something you can’t buy because of the school dress code. For most girls, this is a feeling they know all too well. School dress codes are becoming a major debate all around the country as they are getting so strict. For instance, the MISD dress code states “Yoga pants, jeggings, leggings, tights, exercise/training sportswear, excessively tight pants must be worn with a shirt or skirt that extends past the fingertips”. For most people finding a shirt or skirt for that matter that extends past fingertip length is nearly impossible. Whenever you're talking about dress code chances are that the word distraction will come up. The biggest argument for dress code is that it creates a positive and serious learning environment that helps students focus on learning instead of what their peers are wearing. This is a very important principle in the education system because learning is always the first priority and many things that student could wear would distract others from paying attention to the lesson. Dress codes are also beneficial because they have been proven to “reduce behaviors such as violence or promiscuity” according to Fresno Pacific University. Many schools have reported a drop in fights after instating stricter dress codes. In addition, dress codes are a good alternative to uniforms which are expensive and make students feel trapped.
