The National Drinking Age Act of 1984 required all states to raise their minimum purchase and public possession age of Alcohol to 25 (APIS). If the states chose not to comply, they would face a reduction in highway funds. This act prohibits the purchase and public possesstion of alcohol to miners, but it does not prohibit them from drinking. However, is the age 21 really enough? Through extensive research I have found that drinking before the age of 25 has been known to damage brain structure and function, persons who drink before the age of 25 are more alcohol dependant, and drinking under the age of 25 causes more crimes and fatalities. The fact that alcohol alters with the brains natural frame of thinking, young adults often make choices they often you not sober. When a person becomes intoxicated, they are not fully aware of what they are doing, so they may not be able to react appropriately to certain situations (U.S Department of Justice). They may misread ques from other people as them being offensive and could become violent (U.S Department of Justice). This usually end with young drinkers to become involved with the police. Another fact provided by the U.S Department of Justice, is that a significant part of young drivers killed in car accidents are intoxicated when the crash occurs. College students who drink heavily are more likely to skip class, fail in school and have unplanned sex. This causes many dangerous STD’s which could also lead to the contracting of AIDS, which is non-treatable and always fatal. Sadly, it’s not just the intoxicated young adult who suffers from the misuse of alcohol, it’s also the students who strive to do best in school.
