Drosophila Melanogaster Lab Report

656 Words3 Pages

The species Drosophila Melanogaster was used to test the effects of evolution when it came to selecting against sepia eyed flies. Drosophila Melanogaster or fruit flies were used because of their short reproduction cycle and simplicity. They reproduce and reach maturity fast. In the wild there are two main eye colors for fruit flies red eyes and sepia eyes or dark eyes. The sepia eyes (r) are known to be recessive while the red eyes (R) are dominant. In this lab fruit flies were analyzed for the sepia gene in F2 and F3 generations. This was considered to be microevolution as the flies genotype and phenotype frequencies changed over generations. Microevolution is a change in allele frequencies in a population over time. (Jane Reece 481) Selecting …show more content…

Two different plastic tubes were filled with media and then water was poured in until all the media turned blue in color. After the media turned blue, 3-4 grains of yeast were placed inside the tubes. Next, the flies had to be anesthetized by using FlyNap that was provided by the instructor. Afterwords, the flies needed to be identified by gender, 10 heterozygous male and 10 heterozygous females needed to be placed in one tube. For the second tube the same amount of flies needed to place inside, 10 heterozygous male and 10 heterozygous females. These tubes were then labeled and then placed into an incubator where they were able to mate. After a week the flies were anesthetized once more and then the F1 generation was removed and all the pupa were placed in tubes. After another week past the F2 flies were anesthetized again and documented based on whether they showed the sepia gene. This time all the flies that had sepia eyes were removed from the tube. Next, 10 red eyed F2 male and female flies were placed in a tube to mate and help form the next generation. After another week pasted by the flies were taken out and the flies were analyzed. Only red eyed flies were used in the new cultures. After the F3 generation was allowed to mature they were counted and the numbers of sepia and red eyed flies were counted and
