As humans, we tend to idolize people from all over the world for their remarkable qualities, bravery, actions, skills, leadership or ways of life. These people are often referred to as heroes, whether it is a leader, Superman, or a local community hero, they all share something in common, and it’s not a cape. What makes each of these people heroes? Their extraordinary character traits set them apart from their less noteworthy peers. While there is a myriad of traits that heroes possess, the most significant ones are their bravery, their willingness to ask for help, and their strength to always do what is honorable.
After reading Mother Tongue by Amy Tan, what stood out to me the most was how Amy would always do her best to help her mother. From making a phone call and speaking to health professionals, she did the best she could to help her mother get out of uncomfortable and frustrating situations. This was a personal essay because Amy Tan used a personal experience involving her life and her mother's life. Tan used ethos, logos, and pathos in her essay. She used ethos because she was identifying herself to the reader.
Superheroes expand on the imagination of what humans can be. They have qualities that make the impossible possible. There are two superheros that have qualities that are more realistic. Ironman and Batman have no powers, they are just two men who have the resources to make the world a better place. There are multiple traits to a superhero: the uniform, the secret identity, the hideout, the sidekick, and some other characteristics
Superhero is defined as, “a benevolent fictional character with superhuman powers, such as Superman”. With the exception of fictional characters, there is no one in our society with superhuman powers. In everyday life when humans think of a superhero, the immediate thought that comes to mind are these made up abilities. Despite this cliche image seen in movies or read in comics, superheroes in this world usually do not have those superhuman abilities. Versions of a superhero in reality is an individual who strives to be exceptional and lead others into being the best person possible.
Superman, Black Panther, Green Lantern, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Flash, Scarlet Witch, Black Widow, Wonder Woman. All of these characters are examples for children, or even adults, all around the world, and are considered perfect examples for the term “Hero”. In the odyssey we see the journey of Odysseus, and his perils, and his victories and losses. Odysseus fits the archetype of a hero, in many ways, so he will be compared to a stereotypical hero, Batman. Batman and Odysseus are both fit to be called a “hero” for many reasons, for example, they show strength, bravery, and confidence many times throughout their journeys, they both come up against supernatural foes, and they are both of Noble birth.
Many people would give an example of a super hero. Super heroes are different; a “super hero” is a “benevolent fictional character with superhuman powers, such as Superman”. I always preferred Batman and Iron Man over the rest of the superheroes due to the fact that they are regular people. They don’t need any special powers to fit into the same category as the super heroes that do. A hero by definition is “a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.”
The first thing that comes to mind when hearing the word 'hero ', is comic books, avengers, justice league, super villains etc. Physically, they are usually tall, big, and super strong. On the mental side, they are described as someone who is brave, courageous, determined and are willing to help others and even risk their lives by taking sacrifices. All in all, a hero as seen by many, is portrayed as someone who represents the best qualities of ourselves. However, for someone to be considered a hero, they don 't necessarily need to have all of these qualities as described above.
A superhero can sometimes be a symbol of hope that can destroy all evil. Some examples of super heroes are Beowulf and Superman. Beowulf in the poem “Beowulf” is a hero who fights against a monster named Grendel to defend his people; he is considered the strongest warrior around. Superman on the other hand is considered the most powerful fictional superhero on planet earth, who fights against supervillains to defend human beings. Although Beowulf and Superman are both similar when it comes to heroic traits and that they both go on long dangerous journeys they differ in that they have different heroic deeds and show different timeless values, but somewhat similar universal
Hero or Not? What is an archetypal hero? Superman, Batman, the police, firefighters, your mom or dad? Many think a hero is one who has super powers or a special ability, but there is a lot more to being a hero.
During the Colonial times in America, people from all over Europe migrated to the new American Continent. They came for many reasons such as religious freedom, escape a destitute life, laws or taxes, and most to escape King George III of Britain. Yet the miles of ocean separating them from Britain did not save them from the oppression of Britain’s King or his tax demands. This caused a major unrest among the colonies and eventually led to the Revolutionary War.
A hero can be classified by many things. A hero can be superman, a police officer, and even your mom, but what makes a hero? Is it someone who can fly or shoot laser beams from their eyes or someone who saves a baby from a burning building? I’ll admit some of these characteristics are far-fetched since I don’t know anyone who can fly or randomly saves babies on a normal day. All heroes, including super ones, all have something in common, they 're admired for their courage or an outstanding thing they’ve done.
Frequently in stories, and in real life, people appear to have multiple identities. For example, in William Kennedy’s novel, Legs, the main character, Jack Diamond, develops three distinct identities. There is John Diamond when he is in private, Jack Diamond when the public thinks of him, and lastly there is Legs when he is mythicized. In the film, Miller’s Crossing, the Coen brothers develop their main character, Tom Reagan in a very different style.
Superman, Gandalf, Jay Gatsby, and Harry Potter. All of these character have something in common, all of them are heroes. Heroes are common in many literary works. They help portray messages and feelings in ways the reader would understand. There are three main archetypes of heroes.
But the most prominent example of them all, is the prototypical superhero, Superman. Superman could be described as an amalgam of every great and powerful warrior as one. His co-creator Jerry Siegel states that ‘’ in creating Superman, he wanted to conceive a character like Samson, Hercules, and all the strongmen I have ever heard of…’’. (Smith)(Chapter 15, Section 1 Jerry Siegel quoted 1934) Superman is often compared to a variety of mythological figures, most notably with his Messiah like characteristics, which resembles images of Christ.
