The main character in the Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford, endured numerous troublesome trials. The last trial he endured, in my opinion, was the hardest; giving him the chance to attack and kill Zaroff right then and there, instead choosing not to take advantage of the situation. Ultimately, he confronted and challenged him to a fair and even sword fight, the winner getting to keep Zaroff 's home while the loser was fed to the dogs. This act shows a great deal of Rainsford 's character and personality, proving to be a man of honor and fairness, with respect in this scenario. Rainsford allowed an even fight to take place, and as a result, for his actions, he won while Zaroff received what he truly deserved.
I see a perspective of the quotation, "Character is what you are in the dark.", by Dwight Lyman Moody in the short story, "Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell. This quotation gives the meaning that you see the real characteristic of a character when they are alone, and no one else is around to see what they are doing or how they are acting. You can see some examples of this perspective in the short story with characters General Zaroff and Rainsford. For instance, when speaking with Rainsford about hunting The General states, "It must have courage, cunning, and, above all, it must be able to reason." (Connell P.12).
Zaroff and Rainsford may both be dangerous but the fact that Zaroff is selfish and careless makes him a completely different kind of person. At the end of the story the story Rainsford and General Zaroff are different people. In the story “The Most Dangerous Game” the characters Rainsford and General Zaroff are not similar. General Zaroff is more dangerous and does not care about others as much as he cares for himself. Rainsford Is Rainsford and General Zaroffs personality so different?
Rainsford was a hunter but he became a hunted. Rainsford is faced with the challenge in the middle of the story. Also, the importance of empathy is shown through the changes that occur in Rainsford in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Moreover, it seems that Zaroff considers himself a god who can snuff out life as he pleases.
Rainsford is the character that changes throughout the story while Zaroff remains the same. Some examples of indirect characterization in “The Most Dangerous Game” is when Rainsford makes a prophetic statement in the beginning of the story when he and Whitney discuss whether or not animals feel. Sometimes, there are events that makes us discover a little bit more about ourselves, perhaps our full potential, our stands on certain topics, etc. The majority of people have certain characteristics that they don't show to everyone, things that they prefer to keep secret. I think this quote is very accurate because we often have to face difficulties to demonstrate who we really are and discover our true potential. Our character is a reflection of the moral and mental qualities that make us distinctive to everybody else.
In Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” , Rainsford is the positive force in a classic good vs. evil showdown against a psychopathic man-hunter. For example, Rainsford non - evilness is displayed when he declines General Zaroff’s “ We will hunt - you and I,” (10). This is substantial evidence towards Rainsford morals and integrity as a human. Based on the short story, a good and decent person would not want to hunt someone, it is an act of cold blood.

Although, "A Dangerous Game", written by Richard Conell, is a short story, it has time, effort and enthusiasm put into a compressed text. The author shows this through his ultimate, main character, Rainsford. Rainsford, a man of many idiosyncrasies, would be tested to his limits in hopes of breaking him and making him succumb to the fate someone else planned for him. However, Rainsford had other plans. His plan would take shape through many abilities and overall, great attributes he possessed.
In Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game,” Sanger Rainsford is forced to test his survival skills while he is intensely hunted by an experienced war general named General Zaroff. In this story, Rainsford exhibits some very helpful characteristics like his resourcefulness, his strategic planning, and his ability to reason. As a result of Rainsford’s questioning the validity of General Zaroff’s hunting methods, he ended up playing in the game. Although I believe Rainsford is a very helpful, interesting, and dynamic character, at the end of the story, he must give up his own personal morals to win the game.

Characterization is a big part of the overall meaning of the story which is that survival is of those who are smart, cunning, and can adapt to their environment. The protagonist Rainsford is at a constant battle with the antagonist General Zaroff. Throughout the entire short story they both have similar minds sets and then farther along the main character 's mind set develops into something more. The reader can almost sense a self centeredness, and that he believes that there are only two type of people in this world, “the hunters and the huntees”, and he believes that he is the hunter.
rainsoford has to go through many struggles and has to be the huntee instead of the hunter. Rainsfords values changed by a lot because at first he was saying oh there is two types of people the huntees and the hunters, and im glad im a hunter but when he becomes the huntee not by choice he realizes that it depends on the situation he wasnt going to kill people for fun so he became the huntee and worked his way so he didnt die. but his values changed because he now knows what the other end is like and he should now know not to be selfish and maybe he will be a little bit more
But we should also never underestimate ourselves and never hold ourselves back. Rainsford represents the part of us, focused and does not give up on his goal because it is to difficult. Rainsford was mortified of Zaroff because of who he was, and it was this fear that kept him alive and from becoming a monster. In conclusion, all three of these ways intertwine together, nevertheless he could not have one without he other two. The strong versus the weak, along with becoming what he feared, is what made Rainsford understand the value of life. All his life he had adored hunting, not so much anymore.
