The quote " Character is what you are in the dark" by Dwight Lyman Moody means that we show who we truly are when we face dramatic events. Sometimes, there are events that makes us discover a little bit more about ourselves, perhaps our full potential, our stands on certain topics, etc. The majority of people have certain characteristics that they don't show to everyone, things that they prefer to keep secret. I think this quote is very accurate because we often have to face difficulties to demonstrate who we really are and discover our true potential. He is always following others' rules and he never has a chance to decide and act based on his own ideas and moral standards. In most occasions, Montag is just a reflection of people's expectations. Montag's job consisted of setting fires (which is very ironic) and burning books because knowledge was considered a threat to the higher authorities. In his community people never had time to appreciate the little things around them; their lives were driven by technology and entertainment. However, one day he met a girl named Clarisse, she made Montag realize that he was not happy and that things in his community were not right. Soon, he began to wonder why he was not satisfied with his life, he began to question why nobody had the time to sit back for a minute and reflect upon their lives. He discovered that nothing he had done through out his life defined his character; everything Montag had done was merely influenced by his community. He had adapted an image of someone that was not him. He had to met Clarisse in order to realize that his behavior and his way of living was not who he wanted to be. In his community, reading was prohibited and books were burned intentionally. One time, he was forced to burn a woman alive because she refused to leave her apartment where her books were. Montag was so overwhelmed by the situation that he refused to go back to work. He was determined to comprehend why things had to work in so unpleasant way. Finally, he decided to steel books hoping he would find answers there. In his attempt to discover his purpose in life he had to go against his entire community, lose his wife, and even violate the rules he had followed his entire life.
