How does an author come up with a common theme for someone to understand? Dwight Okita and Sandra Cisneros are both authors that have done this before. They are the authors of "Mericans" (Cisneros) and “In Response to Executive Order 9066: All Americans of Japanese Descent Must Report to Relocation Centers” (Okita). They both have a good understanding on how the gauge the attention of their reader by using something that everyone can relate to. The short story of Mericans has a common theme of cultural heritage, and themes of isolation and conflict which are used to describe her views on diversity. Mericans is a story about a group of kids who are going through a change in their lives due to their environment changing. The story is placed in Latin America. The children are to wait outside of the church and are to stay there. They are not to wonder to the balloon or punch ball vendors. They cannot spend their allowance on cookies or books, this is because their grandmother is against the American society. This is an example of pathos because the children are not allowed to anything fun because their grandmother does not like the American culture. Dwight Okita has a central theme of discrimination against Japanese - Americans. It is written in the first person POV of a young girl who experiences cultural differences between where she came from and where she grew up. Some literary devices she uses are simile, imagery, and personification. Dwight Okita uses the analogy of friendship and freedom to illustrate how fragile both can be through the eyes of the little girl, the protagonist
