Classroom Case Study: ADHD, Dyscalculia, and Depression
1. Characteristics:
For my Classroom Case Study I plan to teach Algebra to high school students varying from 9th grade to 10th grade. According to the principle of natural proportions as stated in the book Exceptional Lives: Special Education in Today’s Schools “It holds that students with exceptionalities be placed in schools and classrooms in a similar ratio of the occurrence of exceptionality within the general population.” By that standard I have 3 students in my classroom of 20 who qualify for special education services under IDEA, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

In Logan’s case collaboration with him would be the biggest encouragement. After completing a lesson on how to factor polynomial functions allowing him to work in a group setting gives him the chance to demonstrate his knowledge verbally and work with other members of the class in order to come up with a solution to the problem. I could also ask his friends and family to help him stay on task when he is home so that he completes his homework. Forming after school study groups could also help him get his work done while in a fun group environment. Working with his special education teacher allows me to get more insight into what Logan’s strong suits are so we can utilize those but still work on building up his weaknesses. Collaboration with Jenny’s special education teacher is very important since she can provide valuable information on Jenny’s learning process and what works best for her. Likewise, talking with her parents about being a positive support system for her when she gets frustrated is very important to her success. Requesting an afterschool tutor would also be beneficial to Jenny since the one-on-one instruction allows her to get her questions answered quickly and fully. Assigning partners in class to work on homework and other assignments together is another helpful approach to helping Jenny succeed since by pairing her with a student who understands the material offers her the chance to ask questions and not be intimidated by having to raise her hand in front of the whole class. My biggest collaborator with Steven would be his parents since he needs a strong support system at home to keep him motivated and make sure he is taking care of himself. Also, working with Steven’s other subject teachers would allow all of us an opportunity to set goals for Steven during the school year that we will all help him achieve. Discussing how to
