The dystopian worlds depicted in the movie Gattaca and the book Fahrenheit 451 show the potential dangers of technology and the ways in which it can be used to control individuals and society as a whole. Both works illustrate the ways in which technology can be used to enforce conformity, limit freedom, and perpetuate inequality. In Gattaca, the technology of genetic engineering has led to a society in which individuals are judged and discriminated against based on their genetic makeup. Those who are genetically inferior are relegated to menial jobs, while those who are genetically superior are given access to the best education and job opportunities.
In the book, “Anthem” we explore inside the mind of Equality 7-2521 and how his mindset changes from “We” to “Me”, making him a very dynamic character. Equality 7-2521 is in a sense a more “Superior” being to his peers and those around him. He possesses a bright and adventurous mind; it’s almost like he doesn’t have any weaknesses at all. The only visible trace of weakness is the guilt inherited from his society about pursuing his own happiness. As the story progresses Equality starts to evolve beyond the guilt which he has endured for so long.
In the futuristic book Fahrenheit 451 reality is turned upside down when heroes become villains. The world is blind to the evils that lay inside the government. The people who aren't are educated are hunted, and seen as insane. Morals will be put to the test, and although this book focuses on one man's journey through it all, it is very clear that the issues this fictional society faces could not be to far from issues what could happen in real life.
