Anthem by Ayn Rand is about a young boy named Equality 7-2521, age 21. Who had recreated electricity, and wanted to show the council to get himself into the home of the scholars. He terrified them all and ran off into the uncharted forest. Where he sees a house full of books. It all finally leads him to believe that you are not free, if you’re not free of your brothers.

In Ayn Rand’s novella, Anthem, mankind is a philanthropic machine. The brotherhood nobly works together to achieve a common goal. In doing so, each man is asked to disregard his own personal means and goals. For every decision must be a collective thought and every advancement, a joint action. However, one man in this machine malfunctions.
In the book Anthem, by Ayn Rand, it tells about a flawless society where everything is gathered and distributed. Eventually the main character escapes the society and lives on his own with everything he can do himself. Ayn Rand went too far when she made the character completely autonomous. Three reasons that support this claim is how they couldn’t make decisions on their own, the way their life was mapped, and how people interact with each other.
How could losing individuality affect a society? Later, he finds himself even though he will have to go through many obstacles to get there. This book is a good book to choose for those who like futuristic stories, or stories that need deep thinking in order to comprehend the book. In this book the main character, Equality 7-2521 is afraid to be independent, since there is no such thing as independence in this story.
Anthem, by Ayn Rand, is dystopic literature. To be dystopic literature, the protagonist feels that something is wrong with the society. The society is supposed to be a Utopia when in reality there is a problem with the society, the people are made to believe certain things that aren’t true. In Anthem, there are many characteristics of dystopian literature present. The whole society is programmed to worship the Great “We”.
In the novel Anthem the author, Ayn Rand discusses the ways Equality 7-2521’s world is a dystopia because independent thought, information and freedom are restricted, the natural world was banished and distressed, a concept is worshipped by the citizens and the society is an illusion of a perfect , utopian world. To begin with, Ayn Rand explains how the Equality 7-2521’s world is a dystopian society because the freedom of think and do anything for yourself is restricted. Equality states “It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see... It is as if we were speaking alone to no ears but our own.
Anthem’s society is dystopian world where all human advancements and technology are absent. Individualism is seen as a sin and is shunned by the citizens. The citizens have been stripped of any solitary rights and only live to serve their brothers around them. Equality was a City Street Sweepers that had always been told that he was different from his brothers; both mentally and physically. Nevertheless, he still worshiped the principles of his world like the people around him.
“Conformity is the jailer of freedom, and the enemy of growth” (John F. Kennedy). The novella “Anthem” written by Ayn Rand expresses the battle between one's self and conformity through the character Equality 7-2521. Equality 7-2521 struggles to conform within the collectivism of his society. As he grows through life he realizes how divergent he really is from his fellow brothers. Through his actions Equality slowly discovers the importance of egoism in a society.
In “Anthem”, by Ayn Rand, Equality 7-2521 is completely unaware that the Council he trusts is actually plotting against him to maintain control of the society, but comes to realize the truth about his society as he questions its morals and eventually runs away to make his own path. This leads to his ultimate realization that his society is completely and totally evil. He weeps when he discovers the word “I”. He had been searching for a word that could suffice for that meaning, but never found it until he ran away from the society to discovery it. The society in Anthem was morally wrong for a handful of reasons.
Ayn Rand was born in St. Petersburg, Russia on February 2nd, 1905. She was only twelve years old when the Bolshevik Revolution led to her father’s pharmacy being nationalized and this event birthed her hatred for communism. She then decided she would use her story-writing skills to express her disliking of collectivism and its impact on Russia. Rand later studied at the University of Petrograd, now known as St. Petersburg, where she studied philosophy and graduated in 1924 with highest honors in history. After graduating, Rand became convinced that Soviet society was not going to change favorably for her
"We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever’”(Rand 19). In Ayn Rand’s dystopian novel, Anthem, the citizens are trained from birth to think only in the plural, to the point where they cannot even conceive of individuals, but only see each other as part of the whole group. Rand’s protagonist, Equality 72521, begins the novel as a street-sweeper who is devoted to the group, but begins to move towards individuality as he progresses towards pure selfishness, as Rand believes we all should. Rand uses the words “we” and “I” to represent Equality’s journey from being dependent on the group, to being utterly independent of everyone.
