Does a dystopian society only exist in books or is it a real life problem? A dystopia is the vision of a society in which the conditions of life are miserable, characterized by human misery, poverty, oppression, and violence. The novel Anthem by Ayn Rand is set in a dystopian society where there is no free will and everyone is forced to think alike. Dystopian societies are said to only be in novels and nothing more than fiction, but what if that wasn't completely true? North Korea is completely excluded from the outside world and controlled by their government. North Korean citizens are forbidden to leave their country, if they do so the government kills them along with their family. People are denied any access to external media, television and radio. All social activities are controlled by the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea in order to annihilate any critical expression against the regime. Telephone calls between the people are domestically confined and are monitored at all times. North Korean citizens have no privacy within their lives. The North Korean citizens live isolated from the world due to how intense they are being monitored and how restricted they are in what they can do. The intense restrictions that are placed on the North Korean citizens keep the citizens in the dark because of the falsified information the government gives it makes them believe that they are the best country in the world. Like in North Korea, characters in Anthem are not allowed to go beyond the Uncharted Forest and what lays beyond is a mystery to them, “men of the city escape alone and run to the Uncharted Forest. These men do not return”. One night Equality 7-2521 was late to the Home of the Sweepers and was punishes, something similar to North Korea where all lights are turned off at a certain time.
