A difference between the two novels is the way the members are placed in their dystopian societies. An example of how members are placed in society in the novel 1984 takes place when Winston reads Goldstein’s book. “In principle, membership in these three groups is not hereditary. The child of Inner Party parents is in theory not born into the Inner Party. Admission to either branch of the Party is by examination, taken at the age of sixteen” (Orwell 208). This example shows how members are not born into their class in this dystopian society; they must pass an exam and this is how they are placed.
