Handicapped, For better or worse My short story was Witten in 1961 by an Author named Kurt Vonnegut. Some other works of Vonnegut may include All the king’s horses, Epiac, Mnemonics, and the Package. Common themes and styles are all dystopian society and dystopian society. “Harrison Bergeron is about a dystopian society were everyone is created to be equal. They citizens of the society are forced to wear handicaps such as masks, extra weight, and tiny little handicap radio to make their thoughts a blur. Characterization is present through all the description about how the government is making people equal. The style of his work is usually the same, mostly about futuristic and dystopian works. Lastly, theme is present through the short story and is Freedom. “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut illustrates that too much new technology could lead to the corruption on society. The story takes place during the year 2081. Everyone was made to be equal through physical and mental handicaps. The strong were handicapped by lots of weight added to them so they couldn’t use their full strength. He is large, tall, extreme intelligence, and handsome so the government labels him as extremely dangerous. “He is a genius and an athlete, is under handicapped, and should be regarded as extremely dangerous” (Vonnegut). People in this society viewed Harrison as extremely dangerous due to his superior stature. They told everyone to fear him although he wasn’t a danger to society he was just tall, smart, and handsome.
