Our decisions in life have always led us to choose the path we want to go and embark the risks and traps it sets upon us. These decisions can be seen in Vonnegut's short story "Harrison Bergeron." This dystopian world has achieved the one thing that seems impossible in today's society, making everybody equal. With everybody finally equal in this fictional world, nobody was better or above average from one another. Peace relives again, until one day the son of George and Hazel Bergeron was sent to prison and later on escaped. Harrison Bergeron's escape from prison creates a moment of panic for society. During Harrison's moment of demonstrating the audience his true intentions, they were terrified of him. Even if there were people who opposed his choice, there were some people who listened to what he had to say and allowed themselves to follow in his footsteps. The Empress of Harrison is a fine example. She was one of the ballerina girls dancing during the program. She had the freedom to choose to join with Harrison. As it states in line 159, "...a ballerina arose, swaying like a willow." This shows how the ballerina responded to Harrison's cries of selecting his Empress and affecting her future for Harrison. Harrison also affected the musicians in the studio. Harrison requests music from the musicians and when the music first began, it was considered to be cheap, silly, and false. But as it states in lines 168 through 171, "Harrison snatched two musicians from their chairs, waved them like batons as he sang the music as he wanted it played. He slammed them back into their chairs. The music began again and was much improved." This shows how Harrison clearly affecting the musicians playing and making them see how well improved they can play without their handicaps.
