Main Turning Points The definition of main turning point is a time at which a decisive change in a situation occurs, especially one with beneficial results. Seeing this definition, have you ever experienced a major turning point in your life? You probably have. How has this changed you? The characters and people in these stories and texts experience main turning points that help them develop as characters and learn lessons and life experiences. In "Barrio Boy" by Ernesto Galarza, "Harrison Bergeron '' by Kurt Vonnegut, and Maizy Chen's Last Chance by Lisa Yee, all the characters face a main changing point in the story that changes them. In the beginning of the book, Ernesto is a nervous, shy boy who is afraid of tall, energetic teachers. Towards the end of the book, he becomes more confident and even learns some English. The main turning point in the text is when he shares his culture with his teacher, Miss Ryan. The story goes on to describe how he warmed up to his teacher and learned English. When Ernesto first arrives at the school, he is met by the principal, who "[he] maneuvered [him]self to keep [his] mother between [him] and the gringo lady "(9). Ernesto was doing this to distance himself because he was afraid. He was afraid because he didn't know any English, was afraid of tall, energetic women, and it was his first day at the school. The big changing point in the story helped him with this because it shows that he has a new found confidence as he "tried interrupting to tell Miss Ryan how [some of the words in the book are] said in Spanish" (14) …show more content…

In the story "Harrison Bergeron," it tells of a dystopian world where people had to wear devices (handicaps) to make them equal, even though their perception of equality is not the same as most people would perceive it. The main characters are Hazel and George, who are Harrison's parents. They introduce themselves and explain to us how their world works. Hazel has "average" intelligence and looks, while George has a higher "intelligence," so he has to wear mental handicaps that play sounds to stop him from thinking too much. As they are watching ballerinas with physical handicaps on TV, a news report comes on and explains how Harrison has escaped from custody and " looked like a walking junkyard’(45) since he has so many handicaps due to his physical appearance and his mental capabilities. It appears that Harrison is forcefully taking the handicaps of the musicians because it caused the musicians to scramble back into their chairs, and Harrison stripped them because he calls himself the "emperor'' to show the people how life would be like without handicaps and to show that he is better than everyone else.
