E. E. Cummings “Dive for Dreams” is a relatively simple poem with simple lines and a simple message. Although simple there are many things that make this poem symbolic in its own way. I connect to this poem because of its powerful meaning about striving for your goals, live each day like it may be your last and the past is what builds you. In the first stanza, he uses the phrase “dive for dreams/or slogans may topple you/ (trees are their roots/and wind is wind)” (Cummings 1-4). I think he’s saying you should be following your dreams and construct your own unique goals in the pursuit of personal growth and self-discovery. In each stanza of this poem, there is a parenthesis section. To me, I think these are little reality checks to keep himself, the writer standing up with his feet on the ground. I can relate to this because I don’t limit myself to what I want to do in life. He uses “trees are their roots/ and wind is wind” (Cummings 3-4). I associate this with being where your feet are and being true to yourself as you go on your journey called life. As he uses “or slogans may topple you” (Cummings 2). I interpret that he is telling the readers to not focus on the bad that goes on in the world, but focus on yourself and where you’re going in life. I can relate to this because there are often times where I feel that there are so many unacceptable crimes and bad things happening around me, and this shows that we can’t dwell on what happens but we can learn from it. Cummings also states “(for god likes girls and tomorrow and the earth)” (Cummings 15-16).
