I grew up in an environment where academics were not a priority on my list. My mom insisted that as long as I tried my best, nothing else mattered. Throughout middle school and the beginning of my high school years, I was convinced that my best was average. I was a C-student who spent most of his time in suspension, and I didn’t pay attention when I did go to class. However, my sophomore year led me to take a different perspective.
By pursuing a teacher credential in mild to moderate disabilities I know I can achieve this goal because I carry a great passion for education and like to help students in need. Throughout my life I have made many friendships with individuals who have disabilities and seen the lack of support many receive in schools. Motivating me to support them in any possible way and inspiring me to became a special education teacher because I want to support them and other student’s in their education. Also, currently, being an instructional aide at an elementary school I have learned that becoming a teacher is something I would love to do every day because I get an opportunity to spend time with students, while I am teaching them and supporting them, it truly makes me happy and fulfilled to know I can make a difference in a child’s life. I expect and hope to graduate in 2021 which will be four years from now. I want to graduate as a bilingual elementary teacher. I have many reasons why I want to be a teacher. Most important I think I always had great teachers that inspire me to become one. My kinder teacher was a kind-hearted teacher who helped me a lot because I was very shy and I didn’t want to play with other kids.

However, looking back, every step I have made in my life has brought me to this point. This journey included a lot of twists and turns in life that made me take a little longer than most to finally get on the right path. It wasn’t until after I started my family that I went back to school to complete my Associate’s Degree in Nursing. While in nursing school, I found myself being the leader of many study groups. I remember how gratifying it was to help others learn, but still it was not enough to encourage me to want to teach.
My overall philosophy includes that the learning environment should obtain knowledge, security, fun, and be a stimulating setting to achieve a child's ultimate potential. This can have promoted both outdoor and indoor through a mixture of spontaneous play and intentional teaching. I have taken a holistic approach which is setup to fulfill the child socially, emotionally, spiritually, physically, and academically. It's very important that a child feels appreciated and valued as an individual. My position as an educator should promote not just academically but personally as well.

I want to become a teacher because I enjoy watching children grow and develop skills needed to be successful in life. Teachers have a large influence on the developing minds of their students and should be mindful of this. I love the “light bulb” moment when children actually understand what you have just taught them. The joy on their faces as they have mastered, or even began to understand, what it is the teacher is talking about is priceless. I believe every child is smart in their own way.
I love to teach little kids and experience what kids in these grades are like and what they like to do. I remember when I was in these grades and I loved my teacher. They seemed like they knew what they were doing and like their job. This is a part of my inspiration of becoming a teacher. The main part is because of my mother.
Similar previous experience that I participated in were personally rewarding and professionally fulfilling. For instant, 10-month certification in Non-profit executive education; another 10-month program in early childhood leadership called, “Taking Charge of Change” brought personal and professional fulfillment. I have been passionate about early childhood field for many years. While working towards Ed. D program my interest extended towards research and policy in early childhood education.
‘Play is essential to development because it contributes to the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional well-being of children and youth’ (Ginsburg, 2013). The Primary School Curriculum and Aistear which is the Early Childhood Curriculum Framework both mention how important play is for the child’s learning and development. Play is so important that it is mentioned and preserved in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) in Article 31 of the UNCRC. Children are their happiest when they play. Elkind states that, ‘A playful childhood is the most basic right of childhood.’
I don’t want to teach grade school or Junior High because I can’t deal with the immaturity and the drama. The position that I would want to teach, is high school English. Ever since I was little I have been good at English, so I have never really learned much in Junior High. The reason that I want to teach high school is simple, I want to teach the students something more than just grammar. In high school, we do poetry, short stories, argumentative essays, and articles of the week.
It took me a whole year in college to realize that firefighting was something I did not want to pursue. Desperately looking for a new major, I started to consider teaching, but purely for selfish reasons. However, somewhere during my second year of college, there was a significant spark that led me to want to pursue teaching for a different reason. In high school, sports were everything, maintaining a good GPA was crucial.
I want to enter into the field of education because I want to see children succeed. I love to let children know that they can accomplish anything that they put their minds to. I want to enter the field of education because I genuinely have a passion to teach and better every child that I can. I aspire to be a teacher because I want to become a great teacher that kids can look up to. I hope to someday be a teacher that when a child grows up they still remember fondly.
