Let's start with the basics. Jamestown was known as the first permanent settlement. It was located in Virginia, and most people were 17-35 and poor. There were about 300 people who came first to the new land.
Jamestown: Founded by Captain John Smith on May 14, 1607, this Virginia Colony called Jamestown, is known as the first English settlement in the United States. This colony is very significant because it was the earliest English settlement. Headright System: The headright system was used to attract new settlers and to address labor scarcity.
Back in the early 1600s Europeans were traveling to the New World for many reasons, such may be for profit, like planting tobacco, those would be the colonist who would settle in Virginia. The people of the Plymouth Plantation came to the colonies, because of their children losing touch with their British roots while living in Holland. " We were all ignorant, and supposing to make our passage in two months, with victual to live. "(Smith 3) Everyone who traveled to the New World faced hardships that were very difficult to endure, but it was "God's will". These two different colonies faced hardships, similar yet also different.
Jamestown was the first colony in America and it was the first glipse of what America would become U.S. history began with the first settlement in Jamestown because it was the first time people began to identify as American. At the most difficult times, the American people were motivated by their desire to create an ideal society. The principles that they held to be true are used as a basis for American society. The people of Jamestown continue to influence our nation today. According to Jamestown and Yorktown Settlement and Victory Center, “The government, language, customs, beliefs and aspirations” that were part of the early Virginian’s lifestyles continue to play a role in American society.
The colony of Jamestown was at a population of 504 after an arrival of a fleet of 9 ships carrying women, men, children and much needed food and supplies. Captain John Smith took hold of the chaotic government and put in place rigid policies of discipline and agricultural cultivation. In 1608 a gunpowder accident wounding Smith, his rivals used this opportunity to force him to return to England and name George Percy as his successor as president of the council. The day before John Smith’s departure, Captain Davis arrived with 16 other men adding to the population of Jamestown. However, a few weeks later, president Percy sent Captain Ratcliffe to build a fort for fishing and trade at Point Comfort.

Although many of these colonies differed in the way of life, each colony faced some similar things that they each had to overcome. These challenges made a massive difference in the way that each of the colonies started out and directly influenced the future for both colonies. When these challenges are faced, many of the settlers will create the foundations of their political, social, and economic systems.

They each had their own unique leaders, form of government, economics, and ways of life, although all the settlers in these colonies had a deep dependence on God. The first permanent English settlement was established in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607 and in 1620 a ship landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts, marking it as the second permanent English settlement.
